River Cities Cup kicks off big week for FC Cincinnati
Most of the hype around FC Cincinnati right now is stemming from the US Open Cup after the club advanced to the semi-final round and earned a showdown the the New York Red Bulls.
But before the players can think about that game, Cincinnati has another game with massive implications. In what has proven to be FCC's biggest rivalry game, they will face off against Louisville City FC on Saturday at Louisville Slugger field. The third USL match-up and fourth overall between the two sides this season sees two teams in the heat of the battle for a playoff spot.
Cincinnati sits in 6th place with 31 points (22 games played) while Louisville is perched two places higher in 4th with 35 points (19 games played). Cincinnati has the edge thus far this season in the Dirty River Derby having drawn 1-1 at Nippert in April and edging out Louisville 3-2 in the last meeting at Slugger field, along with a 1-0 win in the U.S. Open Cup third round.
FC Cincinnati leading goal-scorer Djiby Fall (11 goals) will be available for selection once again after serving a one game suspension for a red card he received against Rochester. It will be interesting to see what kind of squad Alan Koch will field in Louisville with a huge game against Red Bulls just three days later. With both teams needing points to help solidify their push for the playoffs, look for a hotly-contested, chippy game.
No matter what point in the season it is, these two teams always love to beat their bitter rivals and keep the bragging rights on their side of the river.
