Riverboat Preview: Northern Kentucky will host UC in highly anticipated matchup
The riverboat rivalry is back.
The University of Cincinnati will cross the Ohio River and play their tri-county rival, the Norse from Northern Kentucky. The game is scheduled for September 7 at 7 pm EST at the NKU Soccer Stadium. It appears that it will also be broadcast on ESPN3.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Neil Stafford, the University of Cincinnati has seen a rebirth among their women's soccer in the recent years, and they are looking just as sharp this season. They dominated their exhibition matches and scored a combined seven goals while only giving up one. Their success has, so far, translated into their regular season. Sitting at 4-0-1, UC has recorded three clean sheets and only given up three goals in their five matches. This team is set for success, and it starts with their stellar back line.
UC, with their 1-0 victory over Northwestern, just cracked the top 25.
Now, let's take a look at the Norse.
Northern Kentucky University, who has, within the couple years, became a Division I school has seen all kinds of success at the higher level. For starters, their men's basketball reached the NCAA tournament last season. This should be just the start of NKU's DI success.
For their women's soccer, this season has started off, at times, shaky, but they still have a solid 3-2 record. One of their losses came against Indiana State where they outshot their opponent by five and managed to lose 2-1. This team has talent, but they need to finish off more of their attempts.
Needless to say, this team will be ready when UC comes marching in.
This game is the second annual riverboat rivalry. In their only game played at Nippert Stadium, UC took home last season's victory by a slim 1-0 margin. That game didn't disappoint, and I'm sure this one won't either, so get out and support these squads as they leave their all on the field Thursday night.
