Preview: USWNT take on New Zealand as Rose Lavelle returns home
Rose Lavelle is home. The Cincinnati native, who played her club ball with Cincinnati United, made the cut for the Women's National Team roster. But, her hamstring injury has kept her sidelined for quite some time.
Lavelle said that her hamstring recovery is "good" and that "it's had its up's and down's." So, the midfielder that said she was "so happy" about being in Cincinnati will hopefully get some time. Wilma, Lavelle's dog, is apparently predicting a win. Lavelle said that Wilma always predicts a win for the red, white, and blue. The Boston Breaker is just one of several NWSL players that will be competing in this game.
Their opponent, New Zealand, is ranked No. 19 according to FIFA. These teams came off a game this past Friday in which Julie Ertz scored two goals and Alex Morgan made the game unreachable with the third. The women won 3-1 in front of a crowd of 17,301. This game is set to have around 30,000 in attendance so that should be thrilling for coach Jill Ellis and her team.
Where: Nippert Stadium
When: 7:30 pm EST
How to watch: The game will be televised on FS1
The USWNT is coming off a win over New Zealand last Friday in Colorado. Before that, they were disappointed as they took home second in the Tournament of Nations. Australia, who is ranked 6th in the FIFA World Rankings, went a perfect 3-0 in the tournament. This should be another easy victory for the red, white and blue.
These friendlies are a great time for Coach Jill Ellis to work with her group and form unity between her and her players. It also gives the ladies time to work with each other which is of utmost importance in soccer. From the veterans to the rookies, this team and this game will be a fun one to watch.
